80 percent of Americans agree on most important issues. It’s our elites that are causing division. GOUSA is the voice of the 80 percent.
Polling data shows that Americans are not divided on most issues. Rather, it is our political and media elites that are divided and are dividing us.
Take the issue of abortion.
Politicians in the Democratic Party insist on abortion for any reason right up to the point of birth. Some even want to allow abortions after a baby is born alive.
On the other side, some politicians in the Republican Party would allow no abortions at all.
Most Americans disagree with both positions. Polling going back all the way to 1976 shows that most Americans believe that abortion should only be legal in certain circumstances—generally the first trimester and cases involving the health of the mother. Moreover, the views of Americans have not changed at all during the past 46 years.
Politicians aren’t getting the message. GOUSA does. In our opportunity rating system, we ask the following question:
“Does the politician value life and accept the right to choose early in pregnancy (up to heartbeat or first trimester), and oppose later term abortion (through 2nd & 3rd trimester) except in rare and limited cases, such as risk to the life of the mother?”
You could replace abortion with a range of different issues: welfare, government spending, foreign policy, free speech, education … The list goes on and on.
The fact that politicians are not listing to the 80 percent majority that want to see reasonable, common-sense solutions to the challenges facing America is why so many of us are disgusted with politics.
You can see it in the polls. Most Americans dislike both the Democratic and Republican Parties.
It’s not that Americans are divided—it’s that the elites are divided, and that the political and media elites are seeking to divide us.
Batya Ungar-Sargon discusses how it is the elites, not Americans, that are divided. She cites a huge amount of data to back that up.
GOUSA is interested in solutions. Solutions that unite us rather than divide us. Solutions that expand freedom and opportunity for all Americans. Solutions to problems that 80 percent of Americans want solved and solved in a way that is acceptable to 80 percent of Americans.
