GOUSA believes in environmentally-friendly, safe, and economically-sensible solutions to America’s energy needs. Although nuclear power development is stalled in the United States, China is planning a massive expansion of its nuclear power capacity.
According to Bloomberg, China has 46 nuclear reactors under construction or in the planning stages. There are only two reactors under constructions in the United States.
By 2035 China plans to add 150 new reactors with 147 gigawatts of generation capacity.
As a comparison, the combined capacity of America’s 55 existing nuclear plants (93 reactors) is 95 gigawatts. The two reactors under construction will add less than 3 gigawatts of capacity.
America’s failure to develop nuclear power will be a drag on the well-being of the American people and the competitiveness of American industry. Households and industry need access to reliable sources of energy. Nuclear power is the only existing source of reliable baseload power for America’s homes, offices and factories.
Nuclear power development is also a national security issue. China’s building program will make that country the world leader in this vital technology.
Support for environmentally safe energy solutions is one of the subcomponents of the components of GOUSA’s National Opportunity assessment of politicians. To learn more about the GOUSA rating system, visit out 5 Points of Opportunity page here.
